Overdoing

There is a difference between having a lot to do and feeling that everything depends on you.

It is not as if we are trying to avoid work, responsibility or difficult tasks. Rather, try to work but with a condition: without neglecting the balance of the other aspects of your life.

You can have a full calendar without having a frantic heart. You can carry responsibilities without carrying the illusion that you must control everything. You can work hard without making productivity your identity. Living a good life requires work. Give space for ordinary responsibilities while remembering that work should remain ordered and in balance, rather than becoming the centre of life.

Sometimes the problem is not the amount of work. You can have a demanding day and still have an interior sense of freedom. You can have duties without turning every duty into an emergency. You can care deeply about your responsibilities without believing that everything must be done perfectly, immediately and alone. Sometimes the real problem is not the workload. It is the inner pressure we add to the workload.

Most of us are not lazy or irresponsible. Work is a genuine human duty and can be a means of serving family, community and others. Work is for the human person providing structure, meaning and purpose within life; the human person is not for work alone.

There is a rhythm of work and rest, including time for self, relationships, reflection and recreation. Having a simple life is not having nothing to do. It is learning what is actually yours to carry.

Before the next task, ask yourself if this is my responsibility or something I have taken upon myself? Does this genuinely need to be done now or am I doing this from love and duty or from fear, guilt and the need to control? Finally, can I do this fully and completely without spreading myself too thin? Then just do the next thing placed in front of you.

People often overdo things for reasons that have little to do with the actual task. Being responsible does not mean being constantly under pressure.  Learn to carry your duties faithfully without carrying the illusion that you must do everything...
